Computational testing of exact mixed knapsack separation for MIP problems

چکیده
In this paper we study an exact separation algorithm for mixed knapsack sets with the aim of evaluating its effectiveness in a cutting plane algorithm for Mixed-Integer Programming. First proposed by Boyd in the 90’s, exact knapsack separation has recently found renewed interest. In this paper we present a “lightweight” exact separation procedure for mixed knapsack sets and perform a computational experience on a wide set of mixed-integer programming instances from MIPLIB 2003 and “Mittleman” sets. Computational experiments confirm that MIR inequalities are the most important class of valid inequalities form a computational viewpoint. Nevertheless there are several difficult instances where exact separation is able to further raise lower bounds.

A scheme for exact separation of extended cover inequalities and application to multidimensional knapsack problems
We present an exact separation scheme for identifying most violated extended cover inequalities for application to multidimensional knapsack problems (MKP). The minimality of the resulting covers is shown to be a basic property of the criterion used for separation, namely the ratio between leftand right-hand sides of the extended cover inequality looked for. Computational results obtained on a ...
متن کاملPacking While Traveling: Mixed Integer Programming for a Class of Nonlinear Knapsack Problems
Packing and vehicle routing problems play an important role in the area of supply chain management. In this paper, we introduce a non-linear knapsack problem that occurs when packing items along a fixed route and taking into account travel time. We investigate constrained and unconstrained versions of the problem and show that both are NP-hard. In order to solve the problems, we provide a pre-p...
متن کاملOn the Exact Separation of Mixed Integer Knapsack Cuts
During the last decades, much research has been conducted on deriving classes of valid inequalities for mixed integer knapsack sets, which we call knapsack cuts. Bixby et al. (The sharpest cut: the impact of Manfred Padberg and his work. MPS/SIAM Series on Optimization, pp. 309–326, 2004) empirically observe that, within the context of branch-and-cut algorithms to solve mixed integer programmin...
متن کاملModeling Two-Dimensional Guillotine Cutting Problems via Integer Programming
We propose a framework to model general guillotine restrictions in two-dimensional cutting problems formulated as Mixed Integer Linear Programs (MIP). The modeling framework requires a pseudo-polynomial number of variables and constraints, which can be effectively enumerated for medium-size instances. Our modeling of general guillotine cuts is the first one that, once it is implemented within a...
متن کاملA dynamic programming approach for solving nonlinear knapsack problems
Nonlinear Knapsack Problems (NKP) are the alternative formulation for the multiple-choice knapsack problems. A powerful approach for solving NKP is dynamic programming which may obtain the global op-timal solution even in the case of discrete solution space for these problems. Despite the power of this solu-tion approach, it computationally performs very slowly when the solution space of the pr...
